Before I retired I attended a number of symposiums (or symposia if you prefer) about all kinds of topics, most of them related to marketing or metalworking. None of these events offered wine.
Well, the word symposium comes from the greek word simposion, and literally means drinking together. For the Greeks a symposium was a wine drinking party with ''intellectual'' conversation and even music.
How on earth did it ever become a meeting where experts deliver short speeches about mostly very dry topics while remaining totally sober?
If I ever attend another one I will ask for some wine. If they refuse then I will demand that they rename the event from symposium to conference or panel discussion or something like that.
